It’s a Saturday night at the wrestling matches in 1974, when Scot Sothern takes the above picture in the bleachers.
Martha is married to this old security officer and tells Scot how much she just loves a man in uniform.
I love this picture- the blazing Kodachrome, the hard flash..but mostly I love Martha’s proud face.
Scot Sothern is best know for his controversial and haunting series about sex workers or for his portraits of those living on the streets that are often avoided and forgotten about.
The faces of the people in those series remain with me for days or longer...and perhaps that is why I have such appreciation for Mister Sothern’s hopeful photographs as well.
The young kissers, the old couples, the street huggers..they definitely aren’t the majority of his work.
But they’re out there as well.
